Jennifer Nettles honed her singing skills at school programs, at her Southern Baptist church, at the regional theater and in Clover & Company clubs. While studying at the Agnes Scott College, Jennifer Nettles and Cory Jones formed a group called “Soul Miner’s Daughter.” The girls often performed as an acoustic duo, but also played with a band. Nettles and Jones released two albums together – “The Sacred and Profane” in 1996 and “Hallelujah” in 1998. For both albums, Jennifer Nettles and Cory Jones composed the songs collaboratively.
In 1999, Nettles formed a band called “The Jennifer Nettles Band.” From 1999 to 2002, the band released three studio albums – “Drag Me Down, Gravity,” “Story of Your Bones,” and “Rewind.” They also released two live albums – “An Acoustic Evening with Jennifer Nettles I & II.” In 1999, Jennifer Nettles collaborated with Memory Dean (that featured Bubba Dean and Jay Memory) on the track “Fix My Heart,” which was released on the album “Still Hungry Souls.” In 2000, the Jennifer Nettles Band received a Musician’s Atlas Award for “Independent Musician of the Year.”
In 2003, Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush and Kristen Hall formed the band Sugarland. On October 2004, Sugarland released their debut album “Twice the Speed of Life” with hits such as “Baby Girl,” Something More,” “Down in Mississippi (Up to No Good),” and “Just Might (Make Me Believe).” Aside from the album receiving multi-platinum certification, Sugarland won the “Favorite Breakthrough Artist” at the American Music Awards.
When Kristen Hall left Sugarland, Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles continued to perform as a duo. In 2005, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush collaborated with the rock band Bon Jovi on the song “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Bon Jovi and Sugarland also won a CMT award for “Collaborative Video of the Year” in 2006 and a Grammy award for “Best Collaboration” in 2007.
In November 2006, Sugarland released the album “Enjoy the Ride.” While juggling tours, TV appearances and collaborations, Jennifer Nettles and Bush began working on their third album in February 2007. After winning a “Vocal Duo of the Year” award from the CMA Awards, Sugarland released the album “Love on the Inside” in July 2008. Aside from winning another “Vocal Duo of the Year” award from the CMA Awards in 2008, Sugarland’s song “Stay” also led to “Song of the Year” awards from the Academy of Country Music and the CMA Awards. In 2009, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush won two Grammy Awards – one for “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group” and the other for “Best Country Song,” both for the song “Stay.”
